Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 and suffered from various illnesses as a child, so much so that doctors believed he would likely die prematurely. Pilates was determined to return his body to peak physical condition and as a result he studied martial arts, yoga, gymnastics and weight lifting. In 1926 Pilates moved to New York and set up his studio next door to New York School of Ballet, it was there that he developed his exercise programme and Dancers from the New York School of Ballet flocked to him to for advice on conditioning programmes to develop their dancing skills and overcome injuries.
Pilates aimed to develop the complete co-ordination of mind, body and spirit to promote suppleness, muscular power, endurance and posture. Pilates philosophy states that the control of the mind is necessary for the control of the body and their is a heightened emphasis on quality and efficiency of movement.
